Renting in Cambridge will cost you big bucks. In fact, rents there are the most expensive in the state. While further north, rents are growing the fastest in Lawrence, according to Zumper’s Boston Metro Area Report, which analyzed 15 cities across the Commonwealth area to find the most- and least-expensive locations, as well as those with the fastest-growing rents.

In Cambridge, a typical one-bedroom apartment goes for $2,580, followed by Boston, at $2,410, and Brookline, at $2,200.

Five of the North Shore communities had the least-expensive rents, with Haverhill being the most affordable, with a one-bedroom priced at $1,420 per month, followed by Salem and Malden, which both have rents at $1,670, and Medford and Beverly, with rents at $1,730.

Lawrence had the fastest-growing rent, with an 18.7% annual increase. It was followed by Melrose, where rents grew 12.2%, and Cambridge, where they increased 9.3% from last year.

Three North Shore communities had the largest declines in rent year over year. Rents in Medford fell 12.2%, Beverly’s rents were down 10.4%, and rents in Malden declined 7.2%.
